Running Happy Hour a.k.a. An Engineers Guide to Throwing a Party
Want to run Happy Hour yourself? Awesome!
- Be a Hacker Dojo member and attend at least a few Happy Hours yourself.
- E-mail Brian to confirm schedule.
- Choose between 140B and Lobby
- Submit an official event on the Event System taking official responsibility for the event, and ask Brian to cancel his if not done already
- Spend around $100 on Drinks / Food. Must have at least one case of beer, up to you for the rest. Ice is wise, too.
- Costco has the cheapest beer, but it is WARM. But it one day ahead of time and stash in Dojo, or, buy COLD BEER from Safeway.
- Safeway has cheap booze. Avoid BevMo.
- Trader Joe's has cheap wine.
- Walmart has cheap snacks/food.
- Don't buy food that is too complicated. You won't have time to tend to the food, you need to be busy socialzing.
- Kegs: if you want kegs, this is a VERY economical way to get a lot of beer. Go to Tied House in Mountain View sometime before 4pm on Friday and buy a Keg of Amber for $56 (plus $7 tap).
- Arrive 30min early to setup.
- If people are in the room already, announce Happy Hour will be starting at 7PM. They are welcome to continue working, but they may prefer quiet room in 140A Savannah. They are, of course, welcome to just join Happy Hour as well./
- Put the donations box out. Put two five dollar bills of your own in.
- MOST CRITICAL STEP IN THE WHOLE PROCESS: Be there at the start of the event, and open a few beers with whoever is nearby. Usually only 1-2 people are there at 7PM. This is normal. Do not panic. Important to just be there to grow the snowball. Do not leave under any circumstance. If errands are needed, send someone else out.
- Welcome everyone that arrives, especially people that don't look familiar. Make them feel welcome. After talking with them, connect them with someone else.
- Get some music playing. Lobby: There is a portable sound system that moves around, sometimes located in server room. 140B: Plug your computer or something into the big sound system.
- Let people change the music at will, turn off lights, etc.
- Drink a lot.
- Click the "I'm still listening" button in Pandora. Proceed to Step 14.
- Keep going until at least 10pm. 3am at the latest if things have momentum. Push people to move to the Deck for a movie if you need to cleanup before others want the party to end.
- At the end, ask a couple people to help you clean.
- Turn the sound system off / put portable sound unit away
- Recycle!
- Clean any spills
- Put furniture back
- Wipe tables clean
- Pick up trash inside & outside
