This page is a proposal about publishing. You may be looking for Media Coverage.
Goals
- Capture the teachings of the Dojo Classes into a suitable format for dissemination
- All contributors get fame, glory, envy of their peers --- Dojo gets all monetary proceeds
- Open the Dojo to a larger, worldwide audience, not just the physical visitors
Overview
In the simplest embodiment, it would be a book, or series of books that directly capture the Classes content. Content could be a mix of video capture, written notes, slides, but hopefully a lot of sample code or designs, CAD files, etc. (not sure what the artifact for crochet or Lego sculpting would be but I suppose a pattern of some sort!)
Skills/Help/Things/Services Needed
- Experienced content publishers/editors (what makes a good book/video for educational content, what are the best practices, pitfalls to avoid, etc.)
- Contacts with some potential publishers, e-book or otherwise
- Legalese to set up the tax info so that $ amounts that change hands flow directly to Dojo properly
- Define a way to help the class teachers with materials, prep, review, feedback and then recognition, PR, marketing (book signing events?) etc.
List of Potential Chapters/Volumes/Books/Videos (PLEASE ADD YOUR IDEAS HERE)
By default, I assume every item on the Classes list is a candidate, but here are some more focused items that could be chapters or add-ons to a particular class. If anyone wants to see these become classes, just move them to the Classes page:
- 100M+ User architectures, tools, stacks
- 100T+ data architectures, tools, stacks
- Hacking Payments: an open source payment system
- HealthCare Information Technology 2010-1015
- Functional Language architecture, design, code patterns, case studies from real world projects (LinkedIn, Twitter, others care to volunteer?)
- How to hack commercial grade encryption on a budget/How to prevent a well funded government agency from hacking your encryption
- open source lottery system
- quantum computing
- synthetic biology: From BioBricks to Systems Biology
- biological-digital interfaces
- augmented reality applications
- A hacker's view of the world in 2050

Apple has a cool technology called "Podcast Producer" designed specifically to automate the process of capturing classes / presentations on video and making them available on the Web (in a variety of formats). If there's interest I would be happy to help get this set up at the Dojo. I will even donate an iSight camera to get the ball rolling.

Kaelin, Podcast Producer sounds interesting. I would like to start short presentations for the Ruby Tuesday meetups that are starting to happen at the Dojo. It would be nice to have a mix of live action with what is on the screen (Keynote, code, browser).

I have a very good relationship with Mongoose Press, which published my last book of chess instruction. Mongoose would like to branch out to instructive material in other fields.
